A Cup of Tea and Two Strangers

Starbucks Grapevine Texas, I am using Strathmore Artist Trading Cards (ATC) if your interested check this out http://www.strathmoreartist.com/atc.php.

I have been studying Hyperrealism and Chuck Close so I wanted to try drawing toward that genre. I know it isn't Close, pun intend, but I'm drawing small and quick I decided on pushing myself. Here is the Sample of my work, If you look at yesterdays post I did it with pens and pencil in the corner.

It was a beautiful Day, sunny, cool breezy, so I went outside to draw a couple talking about life. i want to draw with more emotion, but I felt I couldn't. I couldn't hear them ( I was listening to a sermon from a friend in Springfield named Josh Crain on my iPod), but I could feel the hurt one of them had, so pulled back and drew without her emotion. I you like it. I finished this at home with Markers.

More Time at Chick-filet

Friday Chick filet again, I like the place but I would like a break in the weather so I can draw outside. It is blazing hot it makes it difficult to go to the lake and draw what i see. I just was drawing every on on my table, not the lady but my markers, pencil, cup etc.

ADAM - Finally! this job is finally done I need a nap.
GOD - one more, you miss this one

Then I went inside, and sat in the Basspro's little coffee shop. it is too bad I couldn't get close to the Lion or the Polar Bear. Basspro does have a weird feel, like your being looked at, like the animals want to attack you. The stuff animal was the zoo of their day, people would come from all around to see how animals from other lands looked. Try explaining a platypus to anyone without a visual. I have a friend named Christina, she is from Spain, tell about when she was sitting at a cafe in Deep Elum, a rat the size of dog scared her. it carried other dogs on it's back. Yeah it was a possum but i have the internet.

Hey. here is the Deer Head on the wall.

Bass Pro Whataburger

Anyone who knows me knows I like Whataburger, wait I love Whataburger, Number 1, no onions, grilled jalapenoes, extra tomatoes. nice and greasy, mustard none of that mayo crap, and BEEF mmmmm.
Anyway my local Whataburger sits in the parking lot of the Outdoor Mecca "Bass Proshop", this means everything in the restaurant has an outdoor theme, stuffed animals, Taxidermy not Beanie Babies, even fish, trout. perch. crappie and of course Bass. I started on a trout, well I think it was a trout it was different. I am not much a nature artist but I like that these fish stay still, always a plus. Pencil

I think I'll come here again and practice

Michelangelo.......not bad of a painter.

This is my version of the Study for Libyan Sibyl from the Sistine Chapel by Michelangelo it is done originally in red chalk drawing 1510-11 .

This is one of my favorites, many you may wonder why the chalk is male and the painting ( fresco ) is female. well back in the day only males were models, like in Shakespeare's time actors were all male.

I enjoy anything by Michelangelo even the stuff he didn't finish, not bad of a painter too, I say this jokingly because he never considered himself a painter but sculptor. Here is my homage. Colored Pencils

Wiiiiiiiiii!!

The hard part of drawing for 1000 hours is the task finding thing to draw that are interesting and unique. i sat on my favorite IKEA chair chose the first thing that would catch my eye. My Wii controller and nunhuk, it is white so my Copic markers are up for this challenge. I like the markers for their ability to layer and build the value of grays. Picture below.

Righteous Bucks!!!

10 hours!!!!

Saturday. Starbucks. Tons of subjects. But as usual, my subjects kept moving, so I went back to drawing my peaches. After finding a corner to peruse the room, I got to drawing. I just bought these drawing trading cards made by Strathmore. They measure 3.5' x 2.5'. I thought I would try using these today.

After a while, I started drawing a guy who had his back to me, and spent about 15 minutes with pencils and markers (COPICS). I gave him the card when I was done, but he didn't seem so enthused. I went back to my peaches, then started drawing a gal sitting in on one of the comfy chairs. Fifteen minutes later, I got interrupted by the guy I drew earlier. He thanked me and gave me 5 BUCKS!! Righteous bucks!!

I finished my other card and gave it to the gal. I think she like it. She was very nice. I hope to have 2 new blog followers. I decided to put the blog address on these cards whenever I give them out. Pictures below.

Just Peachy

My morning starts the same every Friday. I get up way too early, 5:15am, and I am not a morning guy. I have been meeting with these guys for years. One of them, Doug, for 11 years. Just a group of guys trying to figure things out and holding each other up. After our pow wow I stayed drawing again, and like the last time, I was at Chick Fil A with no one. Nilch. Nada. So I worked on some table and chairs as there are plenty of them. Boring yes, but available and they never move.

There is a big promo at CFA for the peach float, so there is a lot of peach paraphernalia lying around. I then decided to start on peaches. I kept getting interrupted by an annoying car alarm though. About ten times, in fact, my car kept crying wolf. I quit drawing and called my dealer. I would have to drive to dallas, but it's okay because I love my dealership. It's a Mercedes/Porsche dealer. I drive a Smart car, which is also there, but Mercedes/Porsche sounds cooler. The waiting area is like an uptown Starbucks, with four computer workstations. After checking email, I check stuff I'm selling on Craigslist. No buyers. Chatted with a friend in Detroit, then returned to my peaches.

Some of you may think peaches are boring, but for me, I love their texture, their unique shape, their aroma, and of course they are very tasty! They bring back many childhood memories. We had a peach tree back home. I shot the neighbor kid in the butt with my BB gun while he was climbing the tree, stealing the delights. After he ran home, his mom spanked him on the butt for stealing. I love Texas!!! I doubt that would end the same today. I digress.

I have been working on this subject now for about six hours. It is really working out. I am using cross hatching with pencil, erasing and building up again with more crosshatching. The texture is really coming out. For those of you who don't know crosshatching, it is making vertical and horizontal lines crossing back and forth, back and forth. The closer your lines are, the darker it gets. It is a time consuming endeavor. Here are some pictures:

Hour 1 and More

Well today was the first day. I decided to go to a personal favorite, Chick Fil A. Yeah, yeah, I know it would sound more artsy if I went to a place of contemplation. Maybe a dive or maybe a hip social gathering place.. but I live in the burbs, in Grapevine, TX, and I really just want sweet tea. At first I had no one to look at, not a soul. Then lo and behold, two guys looking at a fantasy football guide came in, so I started a quick sketch. I grabbed my iPhone to start my stopwatch. Gotta keep time. As I drew, draw, drawded.. oh well.. I thought of "Knocked Up" when Paul Rudd was in his Baltimore O's uniform. Funny.

Any way, I just picked up these new markers called COPIC. I have used them before but I want to start my quest with these. Sorry Prisma, I am leaving you for COPIC. You will find someone else. It's not you it's me. Wait a minute! It is you! You dry out too quick!! COPIC is refillable and thus will last longer. I think, or have been told this. I may return though, I have 1000 hours to find out the truth.

I chose pencils and ink because I need something portable, since I am moving soon. I have pictures at 1 hour, 1.5 hours, and 2 hours and my stuff.

Oh and by the way, my subjects left after 15 minutes, so I had to make up a lot. I guess I should pay for models. Or not. Feel free to start a fund for models. Until a few more hours....

One Hour At A Time

My daughter and I talked about how if you want to get good at something, you have to work at it for a thousand hours. So together, we will embark on an adventure. She's taking up the sax; I'm going to continue to draw. I feel I am pretty good at drawing, but I want to get better. I want to post my drawings as the hours go by--1 hour, 10 hours, 25, and so on.

May you join me in my joy, pain, tears, and victories.
