Drawing in the streets and Galleries in Milan

I am in Milan for a few weeks, So my plan is to go to the streets of Milan and the Galleries and just draw what I see. I have learned that many of the Galleries are closed for the summer and August many just shut down and use the time revamp for new shows in September.

In Europe life slows down many go "holiday" most people get 4-6 weeks vacation a year, most of that time off is August. I think it is because it is HOT a large amount people have no air conditioning and live in cramped spaces so they leave. I did find a few galleries open but on Monday they open at 2:30pm or as they post 14.30, on a side not almost every country in Europe uses military time. Any way the late open times I only made one Gallery on monday. I did walk all over for about 3 hours stopping to find shade then sitting and drawing. Here are a few of the things I saw, the gallery was along Palazzo Reale di Milano The PianoTerra section this had a show with Carla Maria Maggi.

Here is a bit of info  I Googled  on her, It would have taken to long to translate the Italian in the brochure.
This exhibition highlights eighteen of Italian artist Carla Maria Maggi’s (1913–2004) most accomplished paintings from 1933 to 1940 and shows her art to be part of a movement in the 1920s in Milan that sought to bridge the legacy of impressionism and post-impressionism with more traditional modes of figure painting, landscape, and still life.

As I am winding down my time in Germany, I am putting in my time with Expressionism, it was birthed here. Expressionism emerged as an 'avant-garde movement' in poetry and painting before the First World War; in theWeimar years was being appreciated by a mass audience, having its popularity peak
in Berlin, during the 1920s.

Expressionism  Its typical trait is to present the world under an utterly subjective perspective, violently distorting it to obtain an emotional effect and vividly transmit personal moods and ideas.

Captain America, Spider woman and Wolverine

Having some fun reading about the upcoming Avengers  and Thor  Movie coming to a theater near you next summer. I haven't read Avengers in a while I am more a DC guy, But Thor, Capt America and Submariner were my some of my favorites growing up. Wolverine has been recent for me since Xmen movies and finding out  in the comic book Wolverine is 5 Foot 5 inches (Like Me!!), a good read is Wolverine Vol. 3 #66-72, and Wolverine Giant-Size Old Man Logan.

So thinking of those things, I did these, I Hope you like these. I am a comic book nerd, and I am a little sad I will miss ComiCon this year which starts on Wednesday. I have loved seeing costumed folks from all over having a great time lawyers, doctors accountants dressed superheroes and villains, good times.

Oberammergau, Jesus, and Jars of Clay.

Acrylic on canvass 2 hours
On Sunday we trekked to Oberammergauit is the home of a Passion Play, not just any Passion Play but one where the large group in community is apart of. It contains about a 1000 volks of that village( there is more to see so check the link) needless to say I was inspired some paintings and some few sketches. They are all types of artwork of Jesus all over the village mostly a Bavarian ideal of Jesus but still very cool, so here are some of my painterly creations, more of a style I am comfortable with, it does allow the viewer to fill in the blanks, and I make the  attempt to color to provide mood.

Oberammergau Passion Play is a passion play performed since 1634 as a tradition by the inhabitants of the village of OberammergauBavariaGermany.
The town's residents vowed that if God spared them from the effects of the bubonic plague ravaging the region, they would produce a play every ten years thereafter for all time depicting the life and death of Jesus. The death rate among adults rose from one in October 1632 to twenty in the month of March 1633. The adult death rate slowly subsided to one in the month of July 1633. The villagers believed they were spared after they kept their part of the vow when the play was first performed in 1634. The most recent performances took place in 2000 and a season of 102 performances is presently taking place from Saturday, May 15 until Sunday, October 3, 2010.

Still Life Back to Basics.

Some of the basics of drawing and painting is still life, so I decided to go back to the basics, and produce a few still lifes: apples, pears, tomatoes.  These forms are the basic foundation of drawing heads, bodies, and muscle structures, to help improve skills needed to become a better artist.

Drawing some Comic stuff

I have worked a lot with Artist Trading Cards, sometimes I start on a subject and they walk away. With that I have a bunch of half worked on cards, I also believe in recycling so have repurposed them by painting them white and working on them with graphite, markers, and paint (mixed-media).

Romi and other things

This is a drawing of a wood carving from Oberammergau, I like this town in Bavaria it should be called " Jesus ville" there is artwork of Jesus everywhere. Though this isn't Jesus, this is just a cool figure.

This is inspired by a carving from the cemetery, there is a large amount of wood carvings on buildings. Acrylic on canvass 4 hours.

A drawing of a sugar dispenser at the cafe' 30 minutes

This is a friend of mine named Romi, I did in a Warhol style. She has been very good to Marla and myself, she
works at Marla's work. I designed this in Photoshop then painted this on texturized canvass.
